LINZ/WASHINGTON, April 11, 2026 (by Michael Dickens)
When Lilli Tagger and Anastasia Potapova walked out on Center Court for their Upper Austria Ladies Linz quarterfinal Friday afternoon, both players were warmly greeted by the Austrian fans who filled the 3,000-seat main venue at Design Center Linz.
Regardless of who won, for the first time since 1997, the WTA 500 event in its 35th edition was guaranteed an Austrian in the semifinals of Austria’s biggest women’s sporting event.
As chants of “Lilli La Ola” swept through the Design Center, in support of the 18-year-old Tagger, there were plenty of fans cheering for the 2023 Linz champion Potapova, too. After all, she’s now an Austrian after changing her citizenship from Russia during the off-season.
As it happened, the more experienced 25-year-old Potapova ended the dream run of the 117th-ranked wild card Tagger, 7-6 (7), 6-0, in one hour and 35 minutes to advance to her second Linz semifinal in her fourth Linz appearance.

Throughout, the 97th-ranked Potapova was the steadier player, winning 78 percent (28 of 36) of her first-serve points, compared to 63 percent (25 of 40) by Tagger. She was also more efficient in scoring point off her second-serve, 15 of 26 (58 percent), compared to five of 15 (33 percent) for the Austrian teenager. Potapova saved four of five break points she faced and broke Tagger four of six times. She outpointed her opponent 68-49 to reach her first semifinal of the season.
The headstrong Potapova put away the victory on her second match-point opportunity. The two competitors shared a warm hug at the conclusion of the match. Tagger received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd that filled Center Court at the Design Center Linz.
“I’m proud of myself today,” Potapova said during her on-court interview after earning her ninth victory of the season and 12th career victory at Linz. “As I said before, I really like Lilli, I think she has a very big and bright future. … I just want to wish her good luck.
“… I think I did well. I was very focused today. I think that was the key. I tried to stay locked in and think about the next point and to not think about shots that I missed or points that [Lilli] played well. So, I tried to stay focused and I’m very happy I was able to.”

Next Monday, Tagger will crack the WTA Top 100, which should ensure her of a main draw berth in next month’s French Open in Paris. It’s a fine reward for her best WTA Tour main-draw finish.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Potapova will face 104th-ranked qualifier Donna Vekic of Croatia, who advanced over No. 258 Karolina Pliskova of Czechia, 7-5, 6-4, in one hour and 26 minutes. Vekic, who is making her seventh main draw appearance in Austria, is through to her second Linz semifinal in the past three years.

Ruse topples former Linz champion Ostapenko
Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse needed five match points to defeat World No. 23 and fourth seed Jelena Ostapenko. However, thanks to the Latvian’s double-fault on the fifth match point, the 87th-ranked Ruse was successfully through to her first WTA 500 semifinal in her Linz debut after winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in two hours and 21 minutes.

The mercurial Ostapenko hit 40 winners but also committed 27 double faults.

During her on-court interview, Ruse asked the reason for her success this week in Linz. “I think because of my schnitzel,” she said. “I’m eating every dinner, my schnitzel. So yeah, it’s doing pretty well. I’m very happy.”

It’s been a good week for Romanians as both Ruse and 29th-ranked Sorana Cirstea made it to the quarterfinal round. However, the No. 5 seed Cirstea was bounced from the tournament by World No. 10 and top seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2, in two hours and 17 minutes.
Andreeva, who is making her Linz debut this week, converted five of seven break points and outpointed Cirstea 98-90. She improved to 14-2 against players ranked outside the WTA Top 20.
On Saturday, Ruse and Andreeva will face off in the first semifinal, followed by Potapova versus Vekic.
