Fiona Ferro capped a remarkable week at the Clube Escola de Tenis de Oeiras by winning the 10th edition of the Oeiras CETO Open, which was held at WTA 125 level for the first time. The tournament, organized by the Portuguese Tennis Federation, marked a historic milestone as it stepped onto the international women’s circuit.

In a high-quality and physically demanding final, Ferro defeated Polina Kudermetova 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 in one hour and 48 minutes. Both players struggled with physical issues throughout the match, adding to the drama of the encounter.

Kudermetova entered the final already hampered by painful blisters on both feet and required treatment on her left thigh. Ferro took advantage to claim the opening set, but then faced her own setback, experiencing back pain that forced her to leave the court for medical treatment after losing the second set.

With the match level, the opening game of the deciding set proved pivotal. As Kudermetova’s physical condition visibly declined, Ferro raised her level, playing more aggressively and taking control to seal the victory.

“It was a tough match for both of us and I just tried to fight as much as I could,” Ferro said afterwards. “The second set was very difficult, but the medical timeout helped me recover for the third. It means a lot to win again after a long period without titles.”

At 29, Ferro adds this trophy to a career that already includes WTA 250 titles in Lausanne (2019) and Palermo (2020). However, this marks her most significant title since 2020 and her first tournament win since 2023. The victory is expected to lift her back into the world’s top 200 and could prove crucial in her hopes of receiving a wildcard for Roland Garros after narrowly missing the qualifying cut.

Looking ahead, Ferro emphasized the importance of staying healthy and regaining consistency at the highest level. “I want to get back to the main draws of the biggest tournaments as soon as possible,” she said.

Tournament director Joao Cunha e Silva described the anniversary edition as “historic,” praising the quality of the field, the excellent conditions, and the impact of the event on Portuguese tennis. He highlighted the tournament’s role in inspiring both young and experienced players while promoting the sport at a national level.
