The stage is set for another week of international tennis in South Tyrol as the 14th Sparkasse Alperia Trophy gets underway in Bolzano on Sunday. With $30,000 in prize money, 25 ATP Ranking points for the champion, the return of popular night sessions and a strong field featuring players from seven nations, the World Tennis M25 tournament promises a week of top-level competition and packed stands at the TC Bozen.
At the center of attention is local favorite Alexander Weis. The 29-year-old Bolzano native arrives with renewed confidence after a series of impressive performances in France and is edging closer to his best level following a wrist injury. After reaching the final in 2021, where he lost to Italian Matteo Arnaldi, and the semi-finals last year, Weis is hoping to become the first South Tyrolean player ever to win the tournament on home soil.
The qualifying draw was made on Saturday, with qualifying matches beginning on Sunday. The main draw in both singles and doubles starts on Monday, while the final is scheduled for Saturday, 1 August.
The tournament has become one of the sporting highlights of the South Tyrolean summer. The winner will receive 25 ATP Ranking points and a prize cheque of just over $4,000. Off the court, the traditional Sparkasse Alperia Party will take place on Friday evening, and the night sessions introduced successfully last year are expected to bring a lively atmosphere back to the courts on Martin-Knoller-Straße.
Strong regional presence
The field is headed by Sandro Kopp (ATP 293) of Austria. South Tyrol and Trentino are strongly represented, with Alexander Weis, Giovanni Oradini, Stefano D’Agostino and Manuel Plunger already guaranteed places in the main draw.
In qualifying, Maxi Figl and Nicolo Toffanin have secured direct entry. The wildcards have also remained within the region: Nicola Rispoli receives a main-draw wildcard, while Christian Bacher and Moritz Kolbe have been awarded qualifying wildcards after strong performances for TC Bozen’s B1 team this season.
