The singles first round of the Platzmann Open concluded on Tuesday, with four of the eight German players in the main draw booking their places in the round of 16 of the ATP Challenger Tour event in Hagen, Germany.
Diego Dedura led the way with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over qualifier Dominik Recek. After a closely contested opening set in which both players exchanged breaks, the German took control in the second, racing to a 4-0 lead before comfortably sealing the win.
Henri Squire also progressed in straight sets, defeating Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez 6-2, 7-5. Although Agustin Gomez recovered from 1-4 to 4-5 in the second set, Squire remained composed to close out the match.
Tom Gentzsch needed three sets to overcome Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro in one of the day’s most hard-fought encounters. After narrowly losing the second-set tie-break, the German regrouped to secure a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory. He will now face Taiwan’s Chun-Hsin Tseng in the second round.
Tseng advanced after top seed Alex Molcan was forced to retire during the third set because of an abdominal injury.
“I started feeling pain in my abdominal area early in the second set,” Molcan explained. “I didn’t want to take any risks or make the injury worse. I couldn’t fully focus on the match anymore, and against an opponent of this level that’s enough to lose. Retiring was the only option. I don’t know exactly what it is yet, but I don’t think it’s anything serious.”
The all-German showdown between lucky loser Marko Topo and wildcard Max Schoenhaus also went the distance, with Topo coming through in three sets.
“It was a tough match,” Schoenhaus said afterwards. “Marko is an incredibly good player, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I was a break up in the second set, so it’s disappointing that I couldn’t finish the match there. I felt Marko found his rhythm, while I became less comfortable. The third set was very open, but unfortunately I came up short.”
Rudolf Molleker and Niels McDonald were both eliminated in straight sets. Molleker fell 6-3, 6-3 to Czech youngster Maxim Mrva, while McDonald lost by the same scoreline to Switzerland’s Jerome Kym.

Jamie Mackenzie’s impressive run also came to an end. After reaching last week’s ATP Challenger final in Bonn to earn a special exempt into the main draw, the Brit was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Denmark’s Elmer Moller.
The round of 16 begins on Wednesday. Dedura opens the day’s schedule against third seed Zsombor Piros of Hungary, Squire faces Argentina’s Alex Barrena, and Gentzsch takes on Tseng in the final singles match of the day.
