WASHINGTON, October 6, 2026 (by Michael Dickens)
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 season. He confirmed his decision via social media Tuesday, noting that he is receiving a course of treatment for his ongoing right knee injury.
The 25-year-old Italian has been idle since winning his second-straight Wimbledon title in July. After winning his fifth Grand Slam crown, Sinner has missed two Masters 1000 events – Canada and Cincinnati – and one major, the US Open. He also withdrew from the ATP 500 China Open in Beijing, where he was the defending champion.

“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment on my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said in his video statement. “The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be different.
“But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career. I will do everything possible to get back to 100 per cent. I will thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you very, very soon on court again.”

Sinner is the two-time defending Nitto ATP Finals champion, which is held in Turin, Italy.
Earlier this season, Sinner strung together five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles. He lifted trophies in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome to complete the Career Golden Masters. During this time, he put together a career-best 30 match winning streak that ended in the second round at Roland-Garros. Sinner finished his 2026 season with a 44-3 win-loss record and won six titles.
Sinner’s absence, coupled with the nearly-five-month injury respite by Carlos Alcaraz earlier this year, means that the ATP Tour has been without its two biggest stars for much of the 2026 seasons. It also means that current World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has an excellent chance to surpass Sinner by the end of the season to become the new World No. 1.
