Daniil Medvedev was crowned champion of the Almaty Open for the second consecutive time. The world No. 5 and top seed fought back from a set down to defeat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili, ranked No. 128, 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 in Sunday’s final at Almaty Arena.

The championship match lasted one hour and 53 minutes. Basilashvili initially proved a formidable opponent, matching Medvedev throughout a closely contested opening set before edging the tiebreak 8-6 to take the early lead.

However, Medvedev raised his level considerably in the second set. The 30-year-old Russian took control of the rallies, applied greater pressure on his opponent’s service games and dominated the return rallies. He quickly established a commanding advantage and levelled the match with a convincing 6-1 set.

The top seed maintained his momentum in the decider, securing another break of serve before closing out the contest 6-3 to seal the title.

“It is just a matter of time, luck, a moment,” Medvedev said on successfully defending a title. “I was feeling fresh, physically good. Sascha [Bublik] being injured in the semis gave me an extra push in the final and I am happy to finally do it.”

Medvedev delivered an impressive serving performance, firing 22 aces and committing four double faults. He converted four of his ten break-point opportunities, while Basilashvili recorded three aces and the same number of double faults. The Russian also finished with a clear advantage in winners, leading 26-17.

“It was not easy but I had my chances in the first set. I got a bit unlucky,” Medvedev said. “I knew I would probably have my chances to turn the match around and it was not easy. But I am happy to win.”

Basilashvili’s run to the final was particularly noteworthy, as the Georgian came through qualifying to reach the championship match. Along the way, he produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by defeating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals.

Medvedev, meanwhile, capped a strong week in Almaty by lifting the ATP 250 trophy after overcoming a determined challenge from the Georgian in the final.
