Rafael Nadal is preparing to take on a new role away from the tennis court. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has accepted an invitation from Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez to become a member of the club’s board of directors. The proposal, announced by the Spanish giants on November 4, is subject to approval by the club’s members at the General Assembly scheduled for November 21.

For Nadal, the move represents a natural continuation of a relationship that has been part of his life since childhood. The Mallorcan has never made a secret of his affection for Real Madrid and has frequently been spotted in the stands at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. His connection with the club was formally recognised in 2011, when he was named an honorary member.

Nadal welcomed the opportunity to become more actively involved in the institution. “I have accepted this proposal with great excitement, eager to learn and contribute everything I can,” he explained in his reaction to the announcement.

Spanish media, including AS and El País, have highlighted the close relationship between Nadal and Pérez. According to reports, discussions about the appointment had already taken place before the announcement became public, with the club keeping the plans within a small circle.

The decision also brings back memories of Nadal’s previous comments about a possible future in football administration. In 2023, he openly admitted that becoming president of Real Madrid would be an appealing prospect. However, he also expressed doubts about whether he possessed the necessary experience for such a demanding position. More recently, he played down speculation about entering the club’s presidential race.

For the time being, his focus will be on contributing as a board member rather than pursuing the presidency. His experience in elite-level sport, international profile and understanding of the demands placed on professional athletes could make him a valuable addition to the club’s leadership.

Having retired from professional tennis in November 2024, Nadal is gradually exploring new opportunities beyond his playing career. His involvement with Real Madrid offers another platform to remain connected to top-level sport – this time from the boardroom rather than the baseline.
