Local favourites Jiri Vesely and Adam Pavlasek headlined Wednesday’s second round action at the €127,000 Unicredit Czech Open in Prostejov, however, with different outcome.
Vesely dominated his encounter against Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador, winning 88 per cent of his first service points and breaking serve four times to secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory in one hour and 20 minutes.
The second seed and two time Prostejov champion will next take on Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus, who ousted the tournament’s number eight Adam Pavlasek, rallying 5-7, 6-1, 7-6. Ignatik fired nine aces and captialized on seven of his 19 break point opportunities to prevail after two hours and 13 minutes.
Later in the day, top seed Martin Klizan of Slovakia fell to Swedish qualifier Markus Eriksson. The 27-year-old from Gothenburg won 56 per cent of the total points played, winning 6-4, 6-1 in 68 minutes. Next up for Eriksson will be sixth favourite Radu Albot. The World No. 88 from Moldova beat Brazilian Joao Souza 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes.
Argentines Federico Delbonis and Nicolas Kicker, as well as Tommy Robredo from Spain and US-American Tennys Sandgren complete the stage of the final eight.
