Jaume Munar captured his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour, winning Sunday’s final of the €85,000 Open Castilla y León, held on hard courts at the Villa El Espinar. The 20-year-old Spaniard emerged victorious from the all-#NextGenATP encounter with Australian teenager Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4.
Munar, who appeared in his first title match at Challenger level, sent down three aces and won 74 per cent of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 10 minutes.
“I’m very happy. The last months have been difficult for me since I was not winning matches that I hoped to win for the work I was doing. Being able to win this tournament, with my parents and team here, this is something very special,” Munar was pleased.
The Mallorca native earns €12,250 in prize money as well as 100 ATP ranking point and is projected to reach a new career high World No. 200 on Monday.
“I do have the goal of continuing to get better every day. I would like to be able to dedicate myself to tennis for many years. Now I go home, enjoying a week of rest and then I go to play three Challengers on clay.”
