WUHAN, September 26, 2017 (Press Release)

World No.1 and Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza joined Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Tuesday.

Muguruza beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-4 at the £2,666,000 WTA Premier 5 tournament in central China. Muguruza’s win earned her a third round meeting on Wednesday with Polish qualifier Magda Linette.

Ostapenko, fresh from winning the title last week in Seoul, had to overcome a determined challenge from Barbora Strycova 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 as well as stifling daytime conditions to earn her place in round three. She now faces Olympic champion Monica Puig on Wednesday after Puerto Rican Puig knocked out home favourite Shuai Peng 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“I mean, it was tough match today because I just arrived yesterday from Seoul, won the tournament there,” said Ostapenko. “Conditions were tough today but I’m really happy that I was fighting till the end, even I was down in the second set, and won the match.”

Agnieszka Radwanska set up a third round clash with Ashleigh Barty when she eased past Julia Goerges 7-5, 7-5. Seventh seed and last year’s Wuhan Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova was another of Tuesday’s winners 6-2, 6-2 over Wild Card Jill Teichmann and will be up against Carolina Garcia for a place in the quarter-finals who saw off Christina McHale 6-1, 6-1.

China’s Qiang Wang continued her excellent form at her home tournament, following up Monday’s victory over US Open champion Sloane Stephens with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea. Wang now takes on former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova in the opening match of the day at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre.

Tuesday was not without its upsets and saw defeats for seeds Caroline Wozniacki, Simone Halep and Svetlana Kuznetsova, denting the latter’s hopes of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore.
