MADRID, October 11, 2017
Sergi Bruguera and Anabel Medina Garrigues have been presented this Wednesday at the headquarters of the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) as the new captains for the Spanish Davis Cup and Federation Cup team.
Bruguera won 14 singles titles including two consecutive trophies at the French Open in 1993 and 1994 and worked as a coach with Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
“For me it was essential that the players agreed. I spoke to everyone and I have enjoyed their support. This gives me a lot of energy,” told Bruguera. “I am very proud to be the new captain now. I always had two things to do during my career: winning the tournament in Barcelona and the Davis Cup. The first thing is impossible but maybe now I will have the opportunity to achieve the second being the captain of the team.”
Bruguera will start his new journey from 2nd to 4th February in Spain’s World Group first round Davis Cup tie against Great Britain at home.
Medina Garrigues, who currently coaches the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, has also won two women’s doubles titles at Roland Garros. The 35-year-old is still active on the WTA Tour but hasn’t played since August last year due to an arm injury.
“The captaincy is a challenge but it is also a dream coming true,” she said.
Medina Garrigues’ duties as the Fed Cup captain will start on 10th and 11th February in the World Group II first round tie in Italy.
