ECKENTAL, November 4, 2017
Maximilian Marterer continues his great run at his home tournament in Eckental, reaching the final of the €43,000 Bauer Watertechnology Cup. The 22-year-old German defeated Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at the House of Sports.
Marterer sent down 10 aces, winning 90 per cent of his first service points to advance in 66 minutes. The second seed of the ATP Challenger event will bid for his third title of the season following his recent triumphs in Banja Luka and Monterrey.
“Playing here in front of my home crowd is simply amazing. The atmosphere is fantastic,” Marterer said.
Marterer will face Jerzy Janowicz in Sunday’s title match. The seventh favourite from Poland powered past Matthias Bachinger of Germany, rallying 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Janowicz fired 16 aces and capitalized on three of his 13 break point chances. He converted his first match point after two hours and 17 minutes.
Janowicz will appear in his first ATP Challenger final since lifting the trophy in Bergamo in February. En route to the title in Italy, the 26-year-old from Lodz beat Marterer in straight sets. It was the only previous meeting between the two.
