MELBOURNE, January 27, 2018

17-year old Sebastian Korda, of Bradenton in Florida, won the 2018 Australian Open boys’ singles title over Korean Chun Hsin Tseng, 7-6(6), 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena on Saturday. Korda hit 34 winners and broke serve three times to prevail after one hour and 31 minutes.

“It’s definitely special, including being here in Australia – I mean, my sister won her first title here as well,” said Korda, whose elder sister Jessica claimed the Australian Open golf title six years ago. “My dad won his only Grand Slam title here, so it’s very special.

“The main goal here, was try to get this tournament for my dad on his 50th birthday. My mom’s birthday is on the 5th of February, so it’s special as well.”

Korda, whose father and coach, Petr, won the Australian Open men’s singles title 20 years ago, became the fifth US-American ever to win the Australian Open boys’ singles title and the third in the last 50 years following Donald Young (2005), Andy Roddick (2000), Butch Buchholz (1959) and Gerry Moss (1955).

A US-American has now been victorious at the last four junior Grand Slam tournaments, after Whitney Osuigwe at the French Open, Claire Liu in Wimbledon and Amanda Anisimova and theUS Open. All won major girls’ singles titles in 2017.
