STARNBERG, March 16, 2018
The official presentation of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinal clash between Spain and Germany took place at the Palau de la Generalitat in Valencia on Thursday. The tie will be held at the city’s Plaza de Toros from 6 to 8 April 2018.
The event was attended by the highest representatives of the three public institutions involved: Generalitat, City Council and Provincial Council. The president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has been accompanied by the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó; the president of the Diputación de Valencia, Jorge Rodríguez; the president of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), Miguel Díaz; and the president of the Tennis Federation of the Valencian Community (FTCV), Antonio Martínez Cascales.
“The Comunitat Valenciana has a great passion for tennis,” said Ximo Puig.
Jorge Rodríguez pointed out that “more than 10,000 people will enjoy the sports event at highest level. The possibilities offered by the Plaza de Toros de Valencia are magnificent to develop an event like this.”
The president of the RFET, Miguel Díaz, assured that it will be a very competitive and exciting tie in an “incomparable and ideal atmosphere for this high level of tennis.” Ahead of the tie, Diaz is optimistic that the Spanish will reach the semi-finals.
It will be the 17th meeting between the two nations, but the first since 2014. Germany won their last contest in the World Group first round in Frankfurt four years ago, and will hope for a repeat performance as they target a place in the semifinals for the first time in 11 years.
Spain has not progressed to the semifinals since 2012 when they went on to finish runner-up to Czech Republic.
