Only two seeded players will advance to the singles quarterfinals of the $50,000 Atlantic Tire Championships at Cary Tennis Park. No. 4 seed Reilly Opelka and No. 5 seed Bjorn Fratangelo both finished their matches on Wednesday in just over an hour.
Bjorn Fratangelo defeated former Georgia Tech player Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-4 and will face Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia in the stage of the final eight on Thursday. It will be the pair’s third meeting.
Opelka’s 17 aces helped to defeat fellow US-American Donald Young 6-1, 7-6(5). The 21-year-old from Florida will face Germany’s Dominik Koepfer on Thursday. Koepfer rallied past Australian teenager Alexei Popyrin 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in just under three hours, the longest match of the day.
