Brayden Schnur headlined Friday’s quarterfinal action at the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger held on the courts of the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. The last Canadian standing in the singles draw defeated Maxime Cressy from the United States 6-2, 7-5.

Schnur withstood 10 aces from his opponent and broke his serve three times to seal victory in one hour and 11 minutes. Next up for the third seed will be another US-American, Daniel Nguyen, who knocked out No. 2 seed Antoine Hoang of France 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 in almost three hours of play.

Norbert Gombos edged past Zhe Li of China, winning 6-4, 6-2. The sixth favourite from Slovakia fired 11 aces, saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own four chances to prevail after one hour and 18 minutes. Gombos will next face No. 15 seeded Japanese Hiroki Moriya. The 28-year-old from Tokyo beat Cem Ilkel from Turkey 6-4, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

In doubles action, top seeds Adil Shamasdin from Canada and Hunter Reese of the United States defeated Li and Moriya 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final. Fellow Canadian Peter Polansky and partner Darian King of Barbados were 7-5, 7-6 victors over Mexican Hans Hach Verdugo and US-American Dennis Novikov.
