NEW YORK, August 31, 2019

Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time with a straight-sets victory against former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark at the US Open.

The 19-year-old, who has won two titles in her breakout season at Indian Wells and Toronto, defeated the 2009 finalist 6-4, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday. Andreescu capitalized on six of her 17 break point chances to seal victory in one hour and 33 minutes.

Andreescu is yet to lose a set on her main draw debut at Flushing Meadows and will take on US-American qualifier Taylor Townsend for a place in the quarterfinals. The World No. 116 edged past Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7-5, 6-2 to also reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Elise Mertens advanced to the last 16 for the second year in a row with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Andrea Petkovic of Germany. The 25th seed from Belgium, who was a semi-finalist at last year’s Australian Open, struck seven aces and 26 winners to advance in 72 minutes. Up next for Mertens will be US-American wild card entry Kristie Ahn, who beat Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 7-5.

No.26 seed Julia Goerges eliminated No.7 seed Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands with a 6-2, 6-3 win in one hour and 16 minutes. The 30-year-old German will next face Donna Vekic of Croatia, who took out Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-1.

Anett Kontaveit of Estonia withdrew from her third-round match against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland with an acute viral illness. Bencic will advance to the round of 16 via walkover.
