Adrian Menendez Maceiras advances to the second round in Monterrey

MONTERREY, March 3, 2020

Adrian Menendez Maceiras and Shintaro Mochizuki won their opening matches at the Abierto GNP Seguros on Monday leaving the singles main draw of the ATP Challenger 100 event without any competitors from Mexico.

Menendez Maceiras eased past World No. 1,038 Luis Patino 6-0, 6-4 on Estadio GNP Seguros. The 34-year-old Spaniard won 60 per cent of the total points played to advance to the second round in 66 minutes. Menendez Maceiras will next take on No. 15 seeded Australian Bernard Tomic.

Later in the day, Acapulco native Juan Alejandro Hernandez pushed his 16-year-old opponent Mochizuki the distance but eventually fall by the score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The former junior No. 1 and reigning Wimbledon boys’ champion from Japan capitalized on six of his 19 break point chances to celebrate his first match win on the ATP Challenger Tour after two hours and eight minutes.

Both Mexicans entered the tournament with a wild card following a pre-qualifying tournament held at Club Las Misiones.
