INDIAN WELLS, March 9, 2020

Steve Johnson clinched the title of the Oracle Challenger Series Indian Wells. On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in the desert, the No. 5 seed emerged victorious from the all-US-American singles final with a resurgent Jack Sock.

Johnson, who only dropped one total set en route to victories over Marc Polmans, Taro Daniel, Noah Rubin and Mitchell Krueger, saved all seven break points he faced in the title match and converted two of his own three break point chances to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

“I felt really good out there today and played well at key moments. Luckily I got a few break opportunities early to keep momentum going and I played those points well,” said Johnson, quoted by the Oracle Challenger website.

The 30-year-old from California lifted his seventh ATP Challenger career trophy, his second of the season following his triumph in Bendigo, Australia in January. Johnson pocketed $21,600 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.

“I think I bring my game to another level when there’s full stands like today, and that’s why this is one of my favorite places to play. The grounds are packed, the sun is shining, and people are enjoying the game. It doesn’t get much better than playing here,” Johnson added.

ATP Masters Indian Wells cancelled

The swing at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden has come to an abrupt end, as organizers of the BNP Paribas Open announced that the ATP Masters 1000 event as well as the WTA Premier event will not be held this week due to coronavirus outbreak.
