BERLIN, April 3, 2020 (bett1 Open Press Release)
Because of the cancellation of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon (June 29th to July 12th) due to the Corona virus pandemic and the extended suspension of all ATP and WTA grass court events, the bett1open in Berlin are also affected. These decisions have led to the fact that the tennis tournament held on the premises of the LTTC “Rot-Weiß” e.V. cannot be played from June 13-21, 2020 as planned. The organizers are now looking into options to host the bett1open at a later time of the year.
“This was a decision that the WTA and its members did not take lightly, however we remain vigilant in protecting the health and safety of our players, staff and fans,” said Steve Simon, WTA Chairman and CEO. “While we share in the disappointment of the season’s further postponement, our priority remains to support each other during this unprecedented time and work together as a sport in preparation of our return to play.”
“Right now it is of the utmost importance to follow the authority measures to stop the corona pandemic as quickly as possible. Health is the most important thing. Naturally, this is also valid for the tennis tour. Postponing the bett1open to another date in 2020 is an option for us – but only when the situation has improved enough so that the WTA tour can be played again without any concerns,” says tournament director Barbara Rittner.
The main and title sponsor agrees with Rittner as Adam Szpyt, managing director of bett1, emphasizes: “Because of the difficult situation we see it as our responsibility to support all measures which are made by the organizers to allow for an event still this year. Even if it may take a bit longer, we will anchor world-class women’s tennis in Berlin in the years to come.”
“The tennis club LTTC Rot-Weiß supports all possible courses of action which are necessary to hold the bett1open at a later date. I hope that the current situation will get better so that there will be tennis and our members are again able to spend their leisure time here,” says Dr. Dietrich Wolter, president of the LTTC “Rot-Weiß” e.V..
