Miomir Kecmanovic is the champion of the 2020 Generali Open. The 21-year-old Serbian defeated German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-4 on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Kitzbühel.
In front of about 1,950 spectators, the maximum crowd allowed to attend tennis matches in Tyrol this week according to the coronavirus regulations in Austria, Kecmanovic dominated the title match right from the beginning with two early breaks in each set. The World No. 47 won 56 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 16 minutes.
Kecmanovic, who posted wins over No. 6 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, Aussie Jordan Thompson as well as qualifiers Federico Delbonis from Argentina and Marc-Andrea Huesler from Switzerland, captured his maiden title on the ATP Tour. In his only previous final, he finished runner-up to Lorenzo Sonego at the 2019 Antalya Open in Turkey.

“Last year sucked when I couldn’t win the final. I definitely have a lot more experience since then and it means everything to be able to win a title,” said Kecmanovic.
“[The last game] wasn’t pretty, it was definitely difficult. I just tried not to think that it was potentially the last game and I just tried to hit my serves at the right spot. Thankfully, I was able to do that.”
Following Ugo Humbert (Auckland), Casper Ruud (Buenos Aires) and Thiago Seyboth Wild (Santiago), Kecmanovic became the fourth first-time ATP champion of the season. He took away from Austria €24,880 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points.
Earlier in the day, Austin Krajicek from the United States and Croatia’s Franko Skugor clinched the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds defeated Kitbühel’s top-ranked team Marcel Granollers from Spain and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 7-6(5), 7-5 after two hours and five minutes.
Generali and Kitzbühel tournament extend partnership
Organizers of the Generali Open announced on Saturday that the Generali Group, an Italian insurance company, the largest in Italy and third in the world, will remain the tournament’s main sponsor until 2022.
“In these challenging times, extending the partnership is anything but a matter of course for us. We are super happy that we have been able to rely on the Generali Group almost since the beginning of the tournament and hope for many more years together,” the organizers of the Generali Open Kitzbühel, Markus Bodner and Herbert Günther, stated in a press release.
The tournament will return next year scheduled for July 24 to 31, 2021.
