The quarterfinals of the Sparkasse Challenger Val Gardena Südtirol are set. No. 2 seed Ilya Ivashka, the highest-seeded player left in the singles draw at the Tennis Club Ortisei, defeated German qualifier Johannes Haerteis 7-6(3), 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.
The World No. 113 from Belarus fired 10 aces and won 90 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 21 minutes. Ivashka will next take on Tomas Machac. The #NextGenATP Czech, who finished runner-up to Maximilian Marterer at the Slovak Open in Bratislava last Sunday, eased past No. 8 seed Martin Klizan from Slovakia 6-4, 6-2 in only 55 minutes.
No. 3 seed Aslan Karatsev also booked his spot in the stage of the final eight. The World No. 111 emerged victorious from the all-Russian encounter with lucky loser Evgeny Karlovskiy, 7-5, 6-4. Karatsev, a winner of two ATP Challenger titles this season at Prague and Ostrava, capitalized on four of his five break-point opportunities to advance in one hour and 26 minutes. Up next for the World No. 111 will be sixth favourite Federico Gaio, the last Italian standing in the Dolomites of South Tyrol.
