Nika Zupancic, representing TK Krka Otocec, and Matic Spec of the ZTK Maribor were crowned Slovenia’s winter champions last weekend. For both players, it was their first national title. The 10-day tournament was held at the venue of the TK Medvode in the traditional region of Upper Carniola in north-central Slovenia.

Zupancic defeated Petja Drama of ZTK Maribor 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s final. “It’s an interesting tournament for me. I didn’t feel the best today, but I had enough strength and I am happy to have won,” the 21-year-old said afterwards.

World No. 1,023 Spec, who spent four weeks in November in Crete competing in the ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments in Heraklion, beat Matica Dimica, representing TK Triglav Kranj, 6-4, 6-1.

“Conditions for the matches were very good. I would like to praise the organization of the tournament. I felt good, so I was able to play good tennis. The players were able to enjoy themselves. I drove from Maribor every day, so I left immediately after the matches home and rested. At the moment, I am waiting for the calendar for next year. There are not many tournaments at the beginning of the season. So this tournament was also a good preparation,” said Spec.
