World number 227 Mathias Bourgue upset the top-seed of the $50,000 Claro Open, Victor Estrella Burgos on quarterfinals Friday in Bucaramanga. The 22-year-old Frenchman advanced through a 6-1, 7-6 victory over the world number 55. Bourgue won 76% of his first service points and converted three of his six break point chances to prevail in one hour and 21 minutes.
He will now face Gerald Melzer. The 25-year-old Austrian defeated Colombain wild card Eduardo Struvay 6-4, 7-6. Melzer withstood 16 aces and was more solid on his second serve, winning 67% of the points to finish the encounter after one hour and 38 minutes.
Second seed Paolo Lorenzi had to work hard to beat the tournament’s number eight Gastao Elias, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. The 34-year-old Italian withstood eight aces and converted two of his eight break points to prevail in two hours and 47 minutes.
Lorenzi will take on seventh favourite Horacio Zeballos in the semi-finals. The world number 126 from Argentina outlasted Jordi Samper-Montana 6-3, 7-6. Zeballos saved seven of the 10 break points he faced, converting four of his own to seal victory in one hour and 57 minutes. Lorenzi and Zeballos will meet for the secon time on the tour. The only previous encounter between the two was won by the Italian in straight sets at the San Luis Potosi Challenger in 2009.
