Daniil Medvedev is the champion of the inaugural Mallorca Championships held at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponca, Calvia. The top seed from Russia capped his fantastic run this week on grass with a 6-4, 6-2 win over big-serving Sam Querrey from the United States.
In front of 1,500 spectators on a sunny and hot Saturday with temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius on the largest of the Balearic Islands, Medvedev managed to neutralize Querrey’s serve right from the beginning. He withstood 11 aces and broke his rival three times to secure victory in one hour and two minutes.

“It feels great. That’s what I was came here for to try to win some matches forward to maximum. I managed to do it. That’s always a good feeling. It gives you a lot of confidence,” said Medvedev, who only dropped one set en route to the title match.
“I am really happy with my level of the game. I think, today was my best match of the tournament. Everything is only positive.”
By lifting his 11th ATP Tour career title, Medvedev pocketed in Mallorca €70,620 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points. The World No. 2 has now won titles on all four different surfaces, including carpet, on which he lifted a trophy on the ITF Pro Circuit in Trimbach, Switzerland in 2016, as well as on clay. Medvedev was a winner on the dirt at Futures in Telavi, Georgia 2014 and on home soil in Moscow one year later.
“I have won these titles if you cover Futures and Challengers,” Medvedev told Tennis TourTalk during his post-match press conference. “We don’t have carpet on the ATP Tour anymore. I just need to get a clay title, which is not gonna be easy, in particular if I aim to play just the big tournaments this year. But I am really happy to add at least a title on grass, which is a life goal.”

Mallorca champion Medvedev will next play Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round at Wimbledon. The German beat the Russian in his opening match of the Noventi Open in Halle earlier this month.
“Jan is a tough opponent,” said Medvedev about his upcoming task. “I lost to him one week ago but I came here to get the confidence after the loss. Now I have the confidence. Playing Sam was a good practice because they have a similar style of game with big serves and a big forehand. Sometimes you hope to get an easier draw but I am looking forward to it.”
Bolelli/Gonzalez crowned doubles champions
Earlier in the day, Simone Bolelli of Italy and Argentine Maximo Gonzalez captured the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds defeated second favourites Marcus Daniell from New Zealand and Austrian Philipp Oswald 6-1, 7-5. Bolelli and Gonzalez didn’t face a break point and capitalized on four of their own break-point chances to prevail after 68 minutes.
”The second set was really tight, as always, it massively depends on one or two points,” Bolelli said. “We wanted to win this tournament, we played three really good matches. It was the second tournament for us on grass together.
“This is the third title for us, so it is a very good year at the moment and have confidence for Wimbledon next week. I really enjoyed this week, the tournament was really well organised with good facilities.”
Despite it being a semi-final match in Mallorca, Bolelli and Gonzalez were crowned champions after World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Carlos Gomez-Herrera withdrew following their semi-final victory on Thursday. The pair captured their third team title.
