WARSAW/STARNBERG, August 27, 2021
Camilo Ugo Carabelli headlined Friday’s second-round action at the BNP Paribas Polish Cup in Warsaw by knocking out top seed Daniel Altmaier from Germany to reach his third straight quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour.
The 22-year-old Argentine capitalized on three of his nine break-point opportunities to secure a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory in two hours and 15 minutes. Carabelli will next take on No. 6 seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile, who improved to 5-0 in his head-to-head record over Argentine Nicolas Kicker. The 25-year-old from Santiago fired 15 aces and won 79 per cent of his first-service points to prevail 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 after two hours and 36 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Jozef Kovalik also booked his spot in the stage of the final eight at the €44,820 clay-court tournament. The World No. 121 defeated Frenchman Evan Furness 6-2, 7-5 in a rain-interrupted match and will next take on Lucas Miedler of Austria. The 25-year-old from Tulln edged out 18-year-old Polish local wild card entry Szymon Kielan 7-5, 6-4 after one hour and 38 minutes.
“The end of this match in the second set was very difficult,” Kovalik said. “I served to win, so the key was to keep my focus. I felt good on the court and knew that after the break it would be important to win the first ball. I played well in the first and the second set, I fought to the end.”
Nino Serdarusic from Croatia battled past No. 4 seed Tristan Lamasine of France 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 after two hours and six minutes and will next play Michael Vrbensky from the Czech Republic, who also needed to go the distance to overcome Jeroen Vanneste of Belgium. Vrbensky won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes.
