Andujar Advances To Andalucia Open Quarterfinals

Home favourite and 2019 champion Pablo Andujar has booked his place in the quarterfinals of the AnyTech365 Andalucia Open at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano in Marbella, Spain. The No. 3 seed of the €134,920 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament eased past Yannick Hanfmann from Germany 6-4, 6-0 on Estadio Manolo Santana on Wednesday afternoon.

Andujar withstood four aces and broke his rival’s serve five times. The World No. 67 won 60 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 27 minutes. Andujar will next take on Chun-hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei, who knocked off Elias Ymer from Sweden, winner over Stan Wawrinka in the opening round, 6-4, 7-5.

In the bottom half of the draw, Jiri Vesely edged past Norbert Gombos from Slovakia 6-4, 7-6(5). The No. 4 seed from the Czech Republic won 78 per cent of his first-service points and capitalized on two of his four break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 46 minutes.

Up next for Vesely will be Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. The fifth favourite defeated Federico Gaio of Italy 6-4, 7-6(4). Carballes Baena outpointed his opponent 77-60 to secure victory in one hour and 40 minutes.

Thiem tested positive for Covid-19

Meanwhile, the tournament’s top seed Dominic Thiem from Austria announced via Instagram that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
