Boscardin Dias Stuns Kicker At Challenger Salvador

SALVADOR DE BAHIA/STARNBERG, May 4, 2022

Brazilian teenager Pedro Boscardin Dias headlined Tuesday’s second-round action at the Challenger 80 Dove Men+Care Salvador. The 19-year-old qualifier upset the tournament’s No. 5 seed and former Top 80 Nicolas Kicker of Argentina 7-5, 7-6(6) to secure his second main draw match win on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Boscardin Dias fired 10 aces and won 64 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 13 minutes.

“I am very happy with my first round here in Salvador, especially coming from qualifying. A very special victory for me, the best of my career so far,” said the the World No. 526 from Joinville and will next take on his compatriot Orlando Luz.

Another Brazilian qualifier also booked his second-round spot, as Wilson Leite knocked off home favourite and No. 7 seed Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida 7-5, 6-2. The 30-year-old Rio de Janeiro native converted four of his six break-point opportunities to advance after one hour and 55 minutes. Leite will next play Argentine Facundo Juarez.

Top two seeds advance

In other action, the top two seeds were successful. No. 1 seed Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile opened his title bid with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brazilian Joao Menezes in one hour and 22 minutes and will next face local wild card entry Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who outlasted Argentine qualifier Roman Andres Burruchaga 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

In the bottom half of the draw, second-seeded Renzo Olivo from Argentina eased past qualifier Conner Huertos del Pino from Peru 6-1, 6-2 in only 64 minutes. The World No. 188 will oppose Gilbert Klier Junior of Brazil in the next round.
