Brazilian teenager Pedro Boscardin Dias has reached his first quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 19-year-old qualifier defeated his compatriot Orlando Luz 7-5, 6-4 in Thursday’s second round of the Challenger 80 Dove Men+Care Salvador.

Boscardin Dias, who knocked off No. 5 seed and former Top 80 Nicolas Kicker in his opening main draw match, struck eight aces and won 67 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 48 minutes.

“I am very happy with my victory today. I played a tough match against Orlando, who is also a friend. I managed to play with a lot of energy and confidence and I hope to keep playing well and advancing in the tournament,” the World No. 536 from Joinville said.

Boscardin Dias will next take on No. 2 seed Renzo Olivo of Argentina, who beat Brazilian alternate Gilbert Klier Junior 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes.

In other action, Daniel Dutra da Silva edged out sixth-seeded Argentine Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna 6-4, 6-1. The 33-year-old Brazilian converted seven of his 13 break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 29 minutes.

“I managed to play a good match, especially mentally,” Dutra da Silva said. “He’s a tough guy on the court, he’ll do anything to get you out of the game. I came in very focused, started well, had a 3-0 advantage, but then he entered the match. But today, again, I was able to take advantage of the chances I had.”

Up next for Dutra da Silva will be Guillermo Villanueva, who emerged victorious from the all-Argentine affair with Hernan Casanova, winning 6-3, 6-0. The encounter lasted one hour and 21 minutes.
