HALLE/STARNBERG, May 26, 2022
Daniel Altmaier has been awarded a wild card into the main draw of the Terra Wortmann Open. This was announced by the organizers of the ATP 500 grass-court tournament on Wednesday.
Following his triumph at the NECKARCUP in Heilbronn earlier this month, the 23-year-old Kempen native has become Germany’s second-best ranked player behind World No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Altmaier, currently sitting on a career-high World No. 53, has captured four ATP Challenger Tour career titles. He lost in the opening round at Roland-Garros to Jaume Munar and will kick off his grass-court season at the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart.
Medvedev leads Halle entry list
The Terra Wortmann Open field is led by World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev. The 26-year-old Russian will seek his first match win in Westphalia after losing to Jan-Lennard Struff in his debut last year. Home favourite Alexander Zverev signed a three-year contract with the tournament earlier this season. The 25-year-old from Hamburg is bidding for his first Halle crown. Zverev finished runner-up twice, losing to Florian Mayer in 2016 and to Roger Federer the following year. Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, Andrey Rublev of Russia and Canadian young gun Felix Auger Aliassime round out the top-ranked competitors.
The qualifying entry list is led by Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. Germany’s Oscar Otte and Dominik Koepfer will also be part of the line-up.
The Terra Wortmann Open will be held from June 11 to 19 at the OWL Arena in Halle, Westphalia. For tickets, please visit the tournament’s official website.
