Great Britain’s Dan Evans put in a confident, crowd-pleasing performance to beat eighth-seeded Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-4, 6-4 on Friday and set up a Saturday semi-final showdown at the Rothesay Open Nottingham against big-hitting US-American Jack Sock.
The top seed of the €134,920 ATP Challenger Tour grass-court tournament withstood seven aces and broke his opponent twice to secure victory in one hour and 16 minutes.
“It’s nice to be through. It was a good clinical match, I thought I did everything pretty well today,” said Evans. “It’s nice for the ladies, gents and kids who buy the ground pass when I get to play on Court 1. I’ve played all my matches on Centre this week, so it was a nice change.” Sock continued to make a splash on his return to Britain after beating home favourite Liam Broady from Lancashire 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4. Sock, a former World No. 8, had not played in Britain since 2018, but looked comfortable on the Nottingham grass courts as he made his first semi-final on this surface since 2015. Sock prevailed after two hours and nine minutes.
“I thought it was a great tennis match overall. I thought he played great,” said Sock. “There were no freebies and neither of us were letting up, so one of us had to go and win it. I’m happy that I got through. I love it over here, sometimes I feel like an honorary Brit after some of my Wimbledon results. Hopefully it’s going to be a long trip over here.” Australia’s Alexei Popyrin earned his last four berth by beating Ryan Peniston of Great Britain 6-3, 6-4. The fifth seed will play his first-ever grass-court semi-final in what is his debut at the LTA’s Nottingham Tennis Centre. The No. 5 seed will match-up against fellow-Australian Jordan Thompson in what will be their first meeting.
