A trio of home favourites have joined the quarterfinal line-up at the Challenger Corrientes in Argentina on Thursday. Alejo Lorenzo Lingua Lavallan won the longest match of the day by knocking out his fellow Argentine and No. 7 seed of the $37,520 clay-court event Facundo Juarez 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 7-5.
The World No. 426 broke serve five times and won eight points more than his rival to secure victory in three hours and one minute. Twenty-one-year-old Lavallan, a winner of two singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, will next challenge his compatriot Roman Andres Burruchaga, who benefited from the retirement of Argentine qualifier Guido Andreozzi. The 20-year-old son of former footballer and 1986 World Cup champion Jorge Burruchaga was leading 4-2 in the opening set when Andreozzi was forced to stop playing with a right leg injury.
The bottom half of the draw is led by No. 2 seed Francisco Comesana. The World No. 285 from Mar del Plata rallied past Matias Franco Descotte 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Comesana struck seven aces and won 71 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 22 minutes. Up next for the 21-year-old will be Brazilian Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who also had to go the distance against local wild card entry Lautaro Midon, winning 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in two hours and 16 minutes.
Mayer falls in doubles
Meanwhile in doubles, the journey of Leonardo Mayer and Ignacio Monzon has come to an end. Former World No. 21 Mayer, who played his last match at Wimbledon last summer and actually announced his retirement from professional tennis in October, returned to the circuit to compete in his home town for the first time.
After a first-round win on Wednesday, the pair lost 6-1, 7-6(5) to the all-Peruvian combination of Conner Huertas del Pino and Arklon Huertas del Pino Cordova.
