ANTWERP, August 30, 2022 (Press Release)
World No. 8 Felix Auger-Aliassime will compete in the European Open, which will be held from October 16 to 23 in Antwerp, Belgium. The 22-year-old Canadian has clinched one singles and one doubles title on the ATP Tour.
On the ATP Tour, Auger-Aliassime already made his top 25 debut at the age of 18 and has played multiple ATP finals. He reached three championship matches in 2019, another three in 2020 and two finals in 2021. Absolute highlight that year was the semi-finals of the US Open, in which he had lost against Daniil Medvedev in three sets. In February 2022, Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP Tour tournament in Rotterdam. He stole the show after wins against Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, among others. Auger-Aliassime also won twice this year over Jannik Sinner, our previous winner of the European Open.
Tournament Director Dick Norman said: “The fact that Felix Auger-Aliassime has confirmed his participation for the European Open is proof that we have once again taken great steps forward as an organization. Felix is an absolute top player. The Canadian is building a fantastic career in a very short time. We are enormously proud to be able to bring the semi-finalist of the US Open 2021 to Antwerp, which will put itself even more on the map as a world sports city.
“Felix already played a breathtaking match in Antwerp against Zizou Bergs in 2018. Since then, his ranking has gone up rapidly. He is one of those very exceptional talents who reaches the top ten in the world at a very young age. For a young guy and world star, his modesty, simplicity, respectfulness and maturity particularly stands out.
“None other than Toni Nadal, the uncle of Rafael Nadal is coaching Felix this year. I am convinced that Felix still has a fantastic career ahead of him and we will be hearing a lot from him!
The European Open is now in its seventh edition and we notice that it has become a fixture on the calendar of many. Ticket sales are going really well and soon we will announce many more top players.
The European Open pre-qualifications take place this weekend at TC Forest Hills where Belgian top players compete for a wildcard for the European Open qualifying. This takes place on September 3-4.
