Jan Choinski from Great Britain has become the first qualifier in the 12-year-history of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis to clinch the title at the longest-running ATP Challenger Tour event in Brazil. The World No. 457 defeated 2019 Campinas champion and second seed Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru 6-4, 6-4 in the singles final.
The title match was postponed to Monday due to rain after the Choinski won the opening set and Varillas was leading 3-2 in the second. The organizers of the $53,120 clay-court event decided to move the match from the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas to an indoor court at Arena Ace in São Paulo. In faster conditions, Choinski maintained his aggressive style of tennis and gained the decisive break in the 10th game to secure victory in one hour and 35 minutes.

“It was a bit of a crazy match,” said Choinski. “I felt really good on court at the beginning of the match. I served very well yesterday in the first set and suddenly the weather changed. It was very difficult to stay psychologically strong with all this waiting, the cancellation of the match and then returning to the court. Then we came to the indoor court, where I adapted better to the conditions and luckily I was able to close out the match in straight sets.”
The 26-year-old, who was born in Koblenz, Germany, captured his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour. Choinski pocketed $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
“I always dreamed of winning a Challenger. Previously, in 2018, I came very close, I lost in the third set of the final in Meerbusch, Germany,” said Choinski. “I won 11 Futures, but my main objective for the season was to win a Challenger, which I achieved in my first tournament in South America. Now it’s time to work until the end of the season to get into the Australian Open qualifying.”
