Italy defeated the United States 2-1 to reach the stage of the last four teams at the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals in Malaga. Veterans Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli secured the decisive point in the doubles rubber, beating Jack Sock and Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4 in 80 minutes.

“I am really happy, I am here with my ‘brother’ and we played really well,” said Fognini.
Bolelli added: “I am happy for me, for Fabio, for the team. It was really tough, but it is great to be through to the semi-finals.”
Captain Filippo Volandri said: “I’m really proud of my team, and of this crowd.”
Earlier in the singles matches, Taylor Fritz edged past Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(3), 6-3 in one hour and 36 minutes and Lorenzo Sonego defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 7-6(7) after one hour and 44 minutes.
Italy now awaits the winner of the tie between Germany and Canada.
