SANTA PONSA/STARNBERG, June 28, 2023

Yannick Hanfmann has celebrated his first win over a Top 5 player. The 31-year-old German defeated top seed and defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Championships.

Hanfmann, a winner of six ATP Challenger Tour titles, withstood six aces and broke Tsitsipas’ serve three times to prevail after one hour and 45 minutes.

“I think a lot of things have to work to beat a Top 10 player,” said Hanfmann. “I think I had a really good start. Maybe Stefanos was a little bit rusty in the conditions. With the wind and the grass it was not that easy, so maybe having a match already on the first day was really important.

“I served really well in all three sets. Just that one service game with two double faults, but overall I’m really happy with my performance.”

Lopez continues fairytale farewell

The World No. 48 will next take on Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez. The 41-year-old wild card entry extended his run at the final event of his professional career with a 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-3 victory over Australia’s Jordan Thompson. With his two-hour, six-minute triumph, Lopez became the oldest ATP Tour quarterfinalist since Jimmy Connors reached the last eight in Halle aged 42 in 1995.

In other action, Christopher Eubanks emerged victorious from the all-US-American affair with Ben Shelton, rallying 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(2) and will next play French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech, who beat his compatriot Constant Lestienne 6-3, 6-2.
