HEILBRONN, May 11, 2016

Four second round matches concluded in Heilbronn on Wednesday, setting the first two quarterfinals at the €64,000 Neckarcup.

32-year-old Florian Mayer edged his 14 years younger opponent Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. The experienced German won 79% of his first service points and broke the US-American teenager’s serve three times. Mayer closed the match out after one hour and 22 minutes with his 10th ace.

“It was really difficult today,” told Mayer. “We both served well but he is very quick on the court. Gaining the break to lead 4-1 in the final set was the key to success.”

Next up for the former world number 18 is compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff. The 2014 Heilbronn champion, who is seeded sixth, outlasted Renzo Olivo 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. The 26-year-old from Warstein fired six aces, his last on match point to prevail in two hours and 18 minutes.

Carlos Berlocq rallied from a set down to overcome Marsel Ilhan 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. The 33-year-old Argentine landed 78% of his first service, winning 69% of the points. He converted four of his 19 break point opportuninties to complete victory in two hours and 15 minutes.

Berlocq will meet Jozef Kovalik in the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old from Slovakia got the better of Franko Skugor 7-6, 6-2. Kovalik withstood seven aces, saved all four break points he faced, capitalizing on both of his own chances to prevail in one hour and 22 minutes.

In the remaining first round match, lucky loser Yanik Reuter stunned Dustin Brown with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over the seventh seed. The lucky loser from Belgium replaced Daniel Brands, who pulled out with sore throat. Reuter claimed his first victory in one hour and 33 minutes after suffering three consecutive first round losses. He will take on German wild card Yannick Maden next.
