BORDEAUX, May 11, 2016
The upsets at the €85,000 BNP Paribas Primrose ATP Challenger in Bordeaux continued on Wednesday. After the top five-seeds already fell in the opening round, the tournament’s number six Gastao Elias was knocked out by French qualifier Jonathan Eysseric 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
The world number 334 from Grasse had to fight hard, lost his serve four times but also broke the Portuguese three times, winning even one point less than Elias. Nonetheless, Eysseric had the better ending in the decider of the final set, closing the match out after two hours and 14 minutes.
Eysseric’s quarterfinal opponent was found in the most dramatic encounter of the day between Roberto Carballés-Baena and Elias Ymer with the latter rallying back 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. The 20-year-old Swede, who hit five aces, saved two match points in the tie-break of the final set, taking a medical time-out at 6-6 due to a dive with a rough landing. After that, Ymer even tried to outwit the Spaniard with an underarm serve and eventually converted match point after two hours and 46 minutes.
Bjorn Fratangelo outlasted Quentina Halys, winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. The world number 116 from the United States withstood 10 aces, hitting four of his own to prevail in two hours and seven minutes.
Fratengelo will face Steve Darcis in the quarterfinal. The 32-year-old from Belgium dismissed Mathias Bourgue 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final match of the day, winning 64% of his first service points to advance after two hours and six minutes.
