HEILBRONN, June 2, 2024
Tennis action at the 10th edition of the NECKARCUP kicked off on a rain-interrupted Sunday with the first round of the qualifying. 2016 champion Nikoloz Basilashvili made a successful return, winning his opening match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 over US-American alternate Christian Harrison.
The 32-year-old Georgian, who struggled with an elbow injury and had to undergo three surgeries last year, withstood 10 aces and broke his opponent’s serve four times to prevail after one hour and 55 minutes.
“It was a good match in slow conditions,” said Basilashvili during his post match on-court interview. “But a win is a win and I am looking forward to the next match. I still have good memories of the tournament. It was a very nice experience and from then on I played really well. It’s really great to be back.”
Basilashvili will play No. 7 seed Moez Echargui of Tunisia for a spot in the main draw of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 clay-court event.
