RECIFE/STARNBERG, November 10, 2024
World No. 303 Matias Soto from Chile claimed the title at the Brasil Tenis Classic in Recife. In Sunday’s singles final of this ITF World Tennis Tour M15 clay-court event in Pernambuco, Soto defeated 2022 champion Eduardo Ribeiro from Brazil 6-4, 6-2. A Baylor University graduate in Public Relations, Soto played college tennis and has been regular member on the Pro Circuit since 2022.
The 25-year-old recorded his fourth career singles title, his second in 2024. With this win, Soto is expected to achieve a career-high ranking of World No. 280, strengthening his aspirations to qualify for the Australian Open.
“I’ll play every tournament available until the end of the year. From here, I’ll go to the M25 in Sao Paulo, then to a Challenger also in Sao Paulo, and end in Temuco, Chile. The goal is to climb high enough in the rankings to make it into the Australian Open, so I need to keep competing,” Soto explained.
In his victory speech, Soto praised Brazil’s hosting of tournaments, as the country organized 11 ITF World Tennis Tour events in 2024 compared to Chile’s four. He emphasized the significance of these tournaments for players, thanking Brazil for providing these opportunities. Ribeiro also shared his appreciation for these events, highlighting the comfort of competing at home in his native language and currency, especially after a challenging year with injuries.
Soto concluded with enthusiasm: “It’s great to finish the week with 15 more points and a trophy.” As champion in Recife, he earned $2,160 in prize money as well as 15 ATP Ranking points, while the runner-up, Ribeiro, received $1,272 and 8 ATP Ranking points.
