LONDON, February 13, 2025 (ATP Press Release)
ATP players Zizou Bergs (1), Francesco Passaro (2) and Ben Shelton (3) have topped the ATP Carbon Tracker standings for the 2024 season, directing a $100,000 Prize Grant to six charitable causes.
The donations will support a range of global initiatives, from reducing air pollution with the Clean Air Task Force, to removing plastic waste through Ocean Cleanup and protecting rainforests with Cool Earth. At a local level, it has helped Tous à Bord to include young people with disabilities in marathons, the Moore Foundation to create opportunities for disadvantaged youth, and Tennis Vlaanderen to bring free tennis lessons and equipment to underprivileged children.
Zizou Bergs said: “For me, using Carbon Tracker was about making my time on Tour count for something bigger than tennis. To finish top of the leaderboard was a bonus, but the real reward has been seeing the impact we can make together. The causes I chose—Tous à Bord, Moore Foundation, and Tennis Vlaanderen—are all close to my heart, and being able to support them while doing something positive for the planet has been an incredible experience. I’m excited to continue this journey in 2025.”
Massimo Calvelli, ATP CEO, said: “Congratulations to all the players who embraced Carbon Tracker in 2024, and special recognition to Zizou Bergs, Francesco Passaro, and Ben Shelton for leading the standings. It’s the actions of players like these that set the tone for the rest of our sport. To see them not only reduce their own footprint but also create meaningful impact through their chosen causes is inspiring.”
How Does Carbon Tracker Work?
- Track: Players log their travel to tournaments to calculate their carbon emissions.
- Offset: Players mitigate their emissions by purchasing carbon credits through Gold Standard. This supports accredited projects and a range of UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Compete: Players climb the leaderboard via their in-app activity.
More than 100 players used Carbon Tracker to log their travel in 2024, with Mackenzie McDonald, Dominic Thiem, Filip Misolic and Raul Brancaccio joining Bergs, Passaro and Shelton in mitigating 100% of their emissions.
Carbon Tracker 2.0 Unveiled
Building on the initiative’s breakthrough success, the ATP has this week launched Carbon Tracker 2.0, developed in collaboration with Infosys. Updated features include:
- All-New Points System: Recognising players for every action taken within the app – with bonuses given to players that make greener travel choices.
- Enhanced Emissions Tracking: Supporting more modes of transport.
- Pick Your Project: Giving players more control in choosing environmental projects to support through Gold Standard.
“With Carbon Tracker 2.0, we’re redefining sustainability engagement by turning awareness into action,” said Sumit Virmani, Chief Marketing Officer, Infosys. “This enhanced app, shaped by direct player feedback, simplifies the user experience but more importantly, it inspires a deeper commitment to meaningful change. By bridging sophisticated technology with actionable insights, we’re empowering individuals and organisations to accelerate their sustainability journeys. Our strengthened partnership with the ATP is a testament to this shared mission, as we continue to innovate for a more sustainable future.”
