Top Four Seeds Reach Yucatan Open Semi-Final

Yucatan Open in Merida

MERIDA/STARNBERG, March 22, 2025

The top four seeds have reached the semi-finals of the Yucatan Open. Bolivian Hugo Dellien, who will take on third seed Juan Pablo Ficovich from Argentina leads the line-up of last four at the ATP Challenger Tour 75 event in Merida, Mexico. Fourth-seeded Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves will face No. 2 seed Cristian Garin of Chile.

World No. 103 Dellien wasted no time in his quarterfinal victory on Friday, dispatching Argentina’s Renzo Olivo in just one hour and nine minutes with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Despite an early 2-0 lead for Olivo, Dellien took full control, winning every game from that point on.

“It was a perfect night for me,” said Dellien. “I played very well and had a bit of luck on key points. I hope tomorrow goes the same way.” The Bolivian top seed, who has enjoyed his time in Mérida, acknowledged the challenge ahead against Ficovich: “I’ve played him two or three times this year, and they’ve all been tough matches. He was a finalist here last year, so it won’t be easy.”

Garin continued his strong run in Yucatan, reaching the semi-finals once again after a solid 6-3, 6-1 victory over home favourite Rodrigo Pacheco. Garin proved why he was once ranked No. 17 in the world, handling Pacheco with his experience and composure.

“Rodrigo has a bright future ahead,” said Garin. “He just needs to keep going and not get frustrated. If he keeps up this level, he’ll have a great year.”

In a thrilling match, Ficovich secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over US-American Garret Johns. Leading 5-1 in the second set, the Argentine saw Johns fight back to 5-4, saving six match points along the way. However, Ficovich regained his composure to close out the match and book his place in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Meligeni Alves put on a flawless performance, dominating Juan Carlos Prado Angelo 6-1, 6-0. “It was a perfect match, probably my best of the week,” said the Brazilian. “I played at a very high level from start to finish, not leaving any openings.”
