The home favourites delivered a flawless performance on Wednesday, going 4-0 in the second round to set up an all-US-American top half of the quarterfinal draw at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. With five US-Americans already securing spots in the final eight, the ATP Tour 250 clay-court tournament has tied its Houston-era record for the most homegrown quarterfinalists.

Top seed Tommy Paul, who earned his first ATP match win in Houston nine years ago, made a successful start to his campaign with a win over 2019 US Clay champion Cristian Garin. Meanwhile, US-American qualifiers Jenson Brooksby and Colton Smith continued their impressive runs, each securing a fourth consecutive victory to reach the quarterfinals. This marks the second time in three years that two qualifiers have advanced this far at River Oaks. Brooksby’s path was particularly dramatic, as he saved three match points to defeat No. 3 seed Alejandro Tabilo.

Thursday’s evening session will feature No. 2 seed Frances Tiafoe, the 2023 US Clay champion and last year’s finalist, as he returns for his seventh career appearance at River Oaks.

In doubles action, top seeds Robert Galloway and Jackson Withrow became the first team to advance to the semifinals. The remaining two semifinal spots will be determined in Thursday’s matches.
