CIUTADELLA DE MENORCA, April 5, 2025
Lithuanian youngster Vilius Gaubas and Pol Martin Tiffon of Spain have reached the title match of the inaugural Open Menorca. On a sunny semi-final Saturday and in front of packed stands at the Tennis Club Ciutadella, Gaubas fought past Ignacio Buse from Peru 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In a highly entertaining match with a couple of spectacular rallies, Gaubas converted three of his seven break-point chances and won two points more than his opponent to secure victory in two hours and 32 minutes.
“It was more mentally today. I fought for every point and didn’t give up. I was a bit frustrated after the second set but in the end I found my cool, calmed down and enjoyed. This made the difference,” Gaubas told Tennis TourTalk.
“It’s an amazing place here. Our hotel is next to the sea with a a spectacular view and I enjoy it a lot. At the beginning of the week, conditions were not easy as it was pretty windy. Today it was good. The people here are also very nice and treat us good. I am pretty happy right now.”
Gaubas is seeking his second ATP Challenger Tour career title following his maiden triumph in Cordenons, Italy last year.
Later in the day, Martin Tiffon also had to go the distance against Lukas Neumayer from Austria. The 25-year-old Spaniard, who struggled with cramps during the final set, produced 10 doubles faults but also struck four aces to prevail 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach his maiden final on the ATP Challenger Tour.

“It was a good fight, a very tough match. we both played aggressively. I was cramping but I played well in the third set. I stayed calm and it worked out in the end. I am happy to be in the final here in Menorca,” Martin Tiffon said.
“Being in my first Challenger finals means a lot to me. I had to cope with injuries in the past and this is my first season I regularly compete on the Challenger Tour. But it’s only the beginning. I will try to be in the Top 150 this year and reach the qualifying of the Grand Slams,” the World No. 240 added.
Hassan & Ofner triumph in doubles
In other action, Benjamin Hassan of Lebanon and Austrian Sebastian Ofner captured the doubles title. The pair, teaming up together for the first time, defeated Italian wild card entries Andrea and Matteo Vavassori 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 24 minutes. Ofner and Hassan split € 7,220 in prize money and collected 100 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
“We returned well, even though we gave away a silly break at the start. We stayed focused and had fun out there. Tactically, we were smart too, trying to avoid Andrea, who’s No. 7 in the world, as much as possible. Overall, we had great chemistry. It was a good match,” said Hassan.
Will Hassan and Ofner stick together as a team in the future? “Of course, it depends on the tournaments we play,” Ofner explained. “But if we end up competing at the same event again, we’ll definitely play doubles together. Our playing styles complement each other well. I think we’ll team up again in the future.”
