ROME, April 22, 2025
After a breakthrough run to the final at last year’s Roma Garden Open, Vilius Gaubas returns to the Italian capital as the top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 50 event – and with plenty of local support. The 19-year-old Lithuanian has been making waves on the Challenger Circuit and continues to grow in confidence with each match.
We caught up with him following his opening three-set win over Khomuyun Sultanov from Uzbekistan in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Tennis Club Garden on Tuesday to talk about the special atmosphere at the tournament, the challenge of being top seed, and what still lies ahead this week.
Tennis Tour Talk: What’s better – Davis Cup in Lithuania or first round at the Roma Garden Open?
Vilius Gaubas: Very good question (laughs). The people still support probably from last year when I made it from the qualifying to the final. The atmosphere is very nice but I would say that Lithuania Davis Cup is also very nice.
What can you tell us about this tournament in general here?
The atmosphere in the club is very relaxing. The ambient is nice and it’s always a nice feeling when the crowd supports you.

You had three tough matches last week in Madrid. How was the experience in the Spanish capital?
It was physically very tough. I was often down with a set or a break and had to go the distance. Although it wasn’t easy, I kept fighting. Madrid is also at altitude. Then, I faced strong opponents. I played Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals, which was a great experience. He is a very humble guy and a perfect example for every player.
Being a top seed at a Challenger event is still something special for you?
Yes, it’s something special but also builds a bit of pressure on you. I try not to think about it but in the end there is always a bit of this feeling around you. Today, I just tried to relax it worked out.
What can we still expect from you for the rest of the week?
Hopefully some good tennis and when I feel good on the court, I hope for a good result.
Thank you and all the best.
