Zsombor Piros has been crowned the new champion of the Open Comunidad de Madrid by Silverway Asset Management. The 26-year-old Hungarian defeated Austria’s Jurij Rodionov 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 22 minutes to secure the ninth ATP Challenger title of his professional career.

Piros, the fifth seed of the clay-court event in Spain’s capital city, lived up to his status as favourite against a Rodionov who arrived in the final after a marathon semifinal victory on Saturday against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, in a match lasting three hours and 14 minutes.

“It’s a wonderful week on clay,” said Piros. “I haven’t won a trophy in one year and had a lot of ups and downs during that time. But I was working hard and believed in my myself, even in bad moments. Now, I am here with the title. I am really happy and very motivated to go on.”

The world No. 161 took control of the final by edging a tight opening set 7-5 before closing the match more comfortably with a 6-2 second set. With this victory, Piros earned € 15,510 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points. He succeeds Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, last year’s champion at the Open Comunidad de Madrid.
