TIBURON, October 3, 2016

Darian King of Barbados defeated US-American qualifier Michael Mmoh 7-6, 6-2 to win the $100,000 Tiburon Challenger singles on Sunday. The 24-year-old earned his third title of 2016.

King landed 77 per cent of his first serves and converted four of his 12 break point chances to seal victory in one hour and 38 minutes.

“I’m from a small island where this never really happens. I hope to be back next year,” said King.

An Australian flag hanging courtside was a good omen for Matt Reid and John-Patrick Smith. The pair of Aussies captured the doubles championship, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Quentin Halys from France and US-American Dennis Novikov in 45 minutes.

“It’s one of the most incredible tournaments to play in. It’s a pleasure to be here,” said Smith.

At the conclusion of competition, the Tiburon Challenger presented a check for $5,000 to the Foundation for Reed Schools, $5,000 to the USTA Norcal Foundation to support programs for children in underserved areas and $2,500 to the Rotary Club of Tiburon-Belvedere for its education programs.
