Michael Berrer ends his career as professional tennis player with a title. The 36-year-old from Stuttgart won Sunday’s singles final of the 45th Germany’s National Tennis Championships, held in Biberach an der Riß. The top seed defeated second favourite Maximilian Marterer  6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3.

“I am looking forward to the German Championships, because it will be my last tournament as a pro,” Berrer told ahaed of the tournament and added:

“After I had started playing tennis in Württemberg, I was a member of the local squad for many years and I have celebrated my first successes in Biberach. I think that it will be the perfect ending and a good farewell.”

Berrer had been part of the tennis tour for 17 years and reached a career high World No. 42 ranking in 2010. He captured 11 ATP Challenger singles titles, his last in León earlier this season, and lifted one trophy on the ITF Pro Circuit. He was crowned National Champion for the first time.

“It has been a dream come true to lift the trophy here at home in front of my family. Thanks for all the support,” the Stuttgart resident was overwhelmed on Sunday. The father of two children will dedicate his time to his family now but also wants to stay involved in the tennis business.

Witthöft Claims Women’s Title

In the women’s competition, Carina Witthöft defeated local favourite Laura Schaeder 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. It is the first National Title for the World No. 87, who finished runner-up in 2013 and 2014.

“I am very happy that I could win the title this time,” the 21-year-old was pleased with her performance. “It was not easy, as Laura played really well and I had to fight hard. I really love to compete in Biberach, as the atmosphere is fantastic.”

Witthöft will now enjoy a short break before she will start the new season in Melbourne at the Australian Open. “Winning the title here is the right motivation,” she said.
