QUITO, February 13, 2017

Victor Estrella Burgos clinched his third consecutive title at the Ecuador Open in Quito. The veteran from the Dominican Republic saved one match point in the final set-set tie-break to defeat third seed Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-7, 7-5, 7-6. The encounter lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

Estrella Burgos is the first player in ATP World Tour history to win at least three titles at one event and none anywhere else. At World No. 156, the 36-year-old has become the lowest-ranked singles champion since World No. 192 Florian Mayer in Halle in June 2016.

“Without any doubt, this final has been the toughest. Paolo doesn’t give away anything because he is a great fighter. It’s a great achievement for me to win three titles here. The recipe for my success here will be revealed when I retire,” Estrella Burgos laughed. “For sure, I will come back here next year. I will play in Quito every year until I retire.”

Lorenzi, winner of the 2016 Generali Open in Kitzbühel, drops to 1-2 in ATP World Tour singles finals.

“I love playing here and for sure I will be back next year. I loved the crowd and how they welcomed and supported me during the whole week. I am thankful. I am leaving with an ATP final and that’s very important to me,” Lorenzi told.
