MUNICH, March 9, 2017

Organizers of the BMW Open by FWU announced Thursday that Tommy Haas will compete at the ATP 250 event held from 29 April to 7 May 2017 at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos. The 38-year-old German, who has started to work as tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, is playing his last season on the ATP World Tour.

“I am really looking forward to compete in Munich for the last time. Moreover, it will be my first appearance on home soil since my injury, so I guess it is going to be very emotional for me,” told Haas, who captured the title in Munich in 2013. His first round match in the capital city of Bavaria will take place on May 1 on Centre Court, giving all of the spectators the chance to watch the opening encounter of Germany’s former No. 1 player.

“We want to provide Tommy the best possible stage for his last appearance in Munich. We hope that a lot of people will attend the match in order to support him and celebrate the event adequately,” the tournament’s organizer Michael Mronz stated.

Haas made his ATP World Tour debut in 1996, lifted 15 career trophies and reached a career high World No. 2 in 2002. “I will try to play my best tennis in Munich. I want to enjoy the familiar atmosphere at the MTTC Iphitos and would like to give something back to the fans, who have supported me through the last 20 years. Munich is very a special tournament for me,” said Haas.

The veteran will join his fellow compatriots Philipp Kohlschreiber and ATP NextGen star Alexander Zverev, who had already announced to compete at the BMW Open this year. The full entry list as well as the car for this year’s champion will be announced on 24 March.
